Itinerary

  • Day 1: Arrival & Alpine Acclimatization at Amar Prem Haveli

Participants arrive independently at the serene Amar Prem Haveli in Chiala, a heritage property nestled in the hills of Upper Shimla. The choice of this starting point is deliberate. It establishes a base of comfort and cultural richness, creating a psychological anchor for the journey ahead. This "calm before the storm" allows participants to mentally and physically prepare for the raw adventure that awaits. The day is dedicated to acclimatizing to the altitude, a crucial first step for any high-altitude endeavor. In the evening, the expedition leader will conduct a comprehensive briefing covering the route, daily challenges, and stringent safety protocols. This is followed by a thorough inspection of all bicycles and personal gear to ensure every participant is perfectly equipped for the days to come. The day concludes with a welcome dinner featuring authentic Pahari cuisine.

  • Day 2: The Forested Ascent to Giri Ganga & The Journey to Base Camp

The challenge begins. After breakfast, the group cycles from Chiala towards Kharapathar, a village situated at a lofty 8,770 feet 2,743m. The route is scenic, winding through dense deodar and pine forests and past the famous apple orchards of the Kotkhai valley. At Kharapathar, the paved road gives way to the day's true test: a 7 km off-road trail leading to the sacred Giri Ganga temple. This serene spot, surrounded by dense woods, is believed to be the origin of the Giri River, a tributary of the Yamuna. After exploring the temple and absorbing the tranquility of the location, a critical logistical decision comes into play. To conserve energy for the main objective of the tour, participants and their cycles will be transferred via the 4x4 support vehicle to the expedition's base camp in Larot approx. 2,620m. Attempting to cycle the entire distance from Giri Ganga to Larot would involve a significant descent followed by a long, arduous climb, leading to excessive fatigue. This strategic transfer ensures that every rider is fresh and strong for the ultimate challenge on Day 3: the ascent to Chanshal Pass.

  • Day 3: The Crown Jewel - Conquering Chanshal Pass

This is the day the expedition is named for. The entire focus is the return journey to the formidable Chanshal Pass, the highest peak in the Shimla district at an elevation of 3,750 meters 12,300 ft. The ride from the Larot base camp is a relentless 19 km climb. The road conditions are notoriously difficult and are often described by travelers as non-existent, stony, a mix of mud and boulders, and utterly "pathetic"—in short, an off-road cyclist's dream challenge. The route snakes its way up the mountain through a dense forest belt before opening up into alpine meadows, tackling 13 steep hairpin bends along the way. The final kilometers are the most demanding, often with sections of melting snow and ice, even in the summer months. The reward for this grueling effort is the summit. Reaching the pass is a moment of pure triumph, offering breathtaking 360-degree views of the surrounding Himalayan ranges. From this vantage point, one can gaze into the pristine, almost mythical Dodra Kwar valley—one of Himachal's most isolated and untouched regions. It is important to note that while the pass is the gateway, cycling down to Dodra village and back is a 5-6 hour journey by vehicle alone, making it logistically impossible for a cycling group in a single day. The achievement is not reaching the village, but conquering the mighty pass that guards it. After celebrating the ascent and absorbing the panoramic vistas, the group will undertake the thrilling and highly technical descent back to the Larot base camp for a well-deserved rest and dinner.

  • Day 4: A Divine Descent & The Legacy of Hatkoti

Contrasting sharply with the raw physical struggle of the previous day, Day 4 is dedicated to a thrilling descent and deep cultural immersion. The day begins with a long, exhilarating ride down from Larot, following the course of the Pabbar River. The centerpiece of the day is an extended visit to the ancient Hatkoti Temple complex, located approximately 100 km from Shimla on the banks of the Pabbar. This significant pilgrimage site dates back to the Gupta period 6th to 9th centuries AD and is a marvel of classical Nagara-style Shikhara architecture.Participants will explore the main shrine dedicated to Mata Hateshwari, a powerful form of the goddess Durga. Inside the sanctum rests a magnificent 1.2-meter idol of Mahishasurmardini the slayer of the demon Mahishasura, exquisitely crafted from Ashtadhatu, an alloy of eight precious metals. The idol is flanked by mysterious inscriptions in a script that remains undeciphered to this day. The complex also houses an adjacent Shiva temple and a series of smaller stone shrines that local lore attributes to the Pandava brothers from the Mahabharata, who are believed to have spent time here during their exile. This profound cultural experience, placed immediately after the peak physical challenge, provides a contemplative counterpoint to the tour, creating a holistic journey that engages body, mind, and spirit. The day concludes with a triumphant final ride back to the comfort of Amar Prem Haveli for a celebratory farewell dinner.

  • Day 5: Farewell from the Pabbar Valley

Following a final, leisurely breakfast at Amar Prem Haveli, participants will have time to reflect on the challenges and triumphs of their journey through the Pabbar Valley. The tour officially concludes after breakfast, and participants depart with their gear, their bikes, and indelible memories of conquering one of Himachal Pradesh's most demanding and rewarding cycling routes.
